Over two weekends - 22/23 and 29/30 July, the Friends of Royal Victoria Country, will be marking the occasion by offering the opportunity to “sponsor a slate”. For a small donation, members of the public can write a message and sign the reverse of a roof slate which will then be laid by Elliotts Premier Roofing after the event.
David Stubbington of Elliotts Premier Roofing says, “The idea behind the slate signing is to help the Friends of Royal Victoria Country Park raise additional funds for the running of the park and it allows the community to be a part of the restoration project.”
“As one of the oldest firms in Southampton, it’s been a privilege for us to work with other local organisations to restore this iconic chapel.”
The chapel is the only remaining part of the former military hospital which was once the largest in the world. Conservation work on the chapel has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund grant and Hampshire County Council funding worth a total of £3.2million and is due to be complete Summer 2018.
Head down to the chapel at Royal Victoria Country Park from 11am to 4pm on the weekends of 22/23 and 29/30 July for your chance to sponsor a slate and be a part of history.
